GrandMaster D.K. Shin

Grand Master Dong Ki Shin is one of the few highest ranking Martial Arts instructors in the world - who is still training, learning and teaching.

Grand Master Shin started Taekwondo training when he was 10 years old in 1957, shortly after the Korean war. There was only one Taekwondo instructor in his village and he didn't take elementary school-aged children as students. But Master Shin was extremely persistent, and showed up to the dojang everyday, until he was allowed to train!

In 1968, during the Vietnam war the US army invited Grand Master Shin, to train the US army soldiers in Vietnam in Taekwondo techniques. Grand Master Shin accepted and was a combat instructor, responsible for training the famed Tiger Division of the Republic of Korea (ROK) army, the legendary Green Berets of the U. S. Army, and other divisions of the U.S. army.

After the Vietnam war his US army students invited GrandMaster Shin to come to the United States, and so he did! He arrived in California from his home in Seoul, Korea and founded Hwa Rang Kwan, the oldest Korean, traditional Martial Arts school on the West Coast in 1971.

GrandMaster Shin became a founding member of Kukkiwon - the official Taekwondo governing organization established by the South Korean government in 1972. He is also credited with introducing the people of Vietnam to the art of Taekwondo.

Now a 9th Dan Black Belt (at the highest level) in both Taekwondo and Hapkido, Grand Master Shin has spent over 60 years studying and teaching both Korean and Chinese martial arts. He is also attained a masters level at Kumdo and Judo.

When asked why he continues to teach, he says, "I love teaching and I am still learning. The river stops being a river if the water doesn't flow."

KUKSUNIM

Grand Master Shin is known to his students as Kuksunim - the National Head of the Hwa Rang. He is the 49th Kuksunnim.
